host: how is mitch mcconnell looking to the right? guest: this deal is a bad deal for conservatives. i don't know how he can, he's very smart and he's very -- you know, he's willing to make-up popular stands in order to get what republicans want. but this deal is a terrible deal. i think a lot of conservatives will say if nothing happens we'll be in a better position. he he made a number of fumbles along the way that got us to this place. i think at the moment he is getting a little bit more ire from conservatives. host: what did you make of the president's news conference? guest: he comes out and says we need to work together and stop trying to score political points. then he goes on to trash the motives of republicans. "we believe in something. you have your mandate. we have our mandate." i find that to be small and petty. this is it high point for him. this deal he got is a fantastic deal. he is going to have to go back to people and raise more taxes. he said this is not going to work. i think he was lying down the marker. this may

on sunday morning mitch mcconnell calls joe biden. they get together, offers are traded back and forth, and presto, voila, they come up with a deal and they put it on the floor and it sets those thresholds at $400,000 and $450,000 and it's passed at 2:00 last night and so it comes to the house republicans who have met all morning. joe biden incidentally was back on the hill this morning meeting behind closed doors with democrats who are pretty much bystanders to a republican political train wreck at this point. nancy pelosi says the bill representing gigantic progress, that's fine, but this is really on republicans right now. and people are looking at it, i'm already hearing people looking at what house republicans are doing and saying, look, you abdicated your responsibility to write a bill. you punted over to the senate, and now you're going to throw a monkey wrench into this whole thing and make us come back perhaps in a new congress with a clean legislative slate. so it is a very dangerous not only economic situation here that we'

there's no time set for this meeting tomorrow, but mitch mcconnell says he does expect to go. and so that really does speak to the next move, tomorrow. >> well, that is good news. that is good news, senator mcconnell going to the white house tomorrow, hopefully. but i'm going to ask you about the house of representatives, dana. right now they've been called back to washington, not until sunday, december 30th. now, 48 hours before the fiscal cliff goes over, is that really enough time to get legislation passed, if there's a real deal on the table? >> reporter: is it enough time? probably. if there's really something that is going to pass the senate, and this is a big if, as jessica said, the oddsmakers are definitely seeing the fiscal cliff happening, us going over the fiscal cliff, but if senate does pass something, that would be the next move, then the house could pretty easily take it up and pass it on sunday night or monday morning, on the actual day of december 31st. i think at this point, it's more of a question of optics, and democrats were definitely trying to take adva
